There should be no problem learning the guitar via the internet. There's a wealth of information out there for for beginners and the more experienced players. Buy yourself a proper tuner for a start. Good luck with it.

It can be very difficult to learn (unless your'e a gifted child) without some instruction, but it is possible. The books can show you what you need, but lack some of the subtle details you can intuitively pick-up from an instructor. To begin, you'd need to learn the basic open-position chords; with just the "C" and "G7" chords, there's thousands of songs you can play rythmn for. Once you have the basic chords, then start in on scales and the "barr" chords. With just these basic elements, you can play an accompaniment for almost anything. Learning to play a good solid rythmn guitar is the foundation for the more complex stuff. Finger-picking and lead playing are much more complicated and you'll need to find some other guitarists to play with - and learn from. Within six-months you should be able to play all the basic chords and apply rythmn to songs as you sing - lead playing could take you twenty years. Just be aware, that the process IS difficult at times, it's frustrating at times, and you will regularly want to smash the guitar against a tree. But every time you "get" a new chord or make a fingering work, that all goes away and satisfaction exceeds all else. Also - don't be cheap on the guitar. A quality guitar makes the process much more enjoyable and a poor-quality guitar really makes it worse. You don't need a high-price guitar, but the setup needs to be good and the neck straight. Shop around with several dealers - ask questions and cross-compare their answeres. And try every guitar in every store. When you find one you like the feel of - you've got it.

It's a long road to learn but it's fun.First thing is the things your gonna need.A guitar,Picks [If you use one],Capo [Clamp],Backup Strings,Sheet Music,A Chord Book and A Tuner. This sounds high but it's really not.Just buy what you can when you have it.I usually fly solo with just a guitar and no clamp or pick.

Anyways. To play a song you need to know what chords to change to when your playing. This is a great site to learn what chords go where.http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/

Now if you want to put all this together there are free videos that show you how to do that on youtube. The guy is named Justin Sandercore and he's pretty good. Here's his profile.
http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=JustinSandercoe
This guy can show you some pretty good stuff.

I hope you learn how to play great.

Hey I taught myself to learn the guitar. I just googled "easy guitar songs & chords." Something always comes up. Then once you learn a few chords you can go to www.ultimate-guitar.com and look up some of your favorite songs to find out which ones you can play. It will take a while, but after a little over a year I have written about 25 of my own songs. It just takes practice practice practice.

Good luck,

-ZZ

There are a lot of Dvd's you can buy that are good lessons in playing guitar, and if you miss something or dont understand it, you can rewind it over and over and start again! Try going to Borders, if you have one in your area. They have a whole section on books and videos for guitar instruction.

It's possible to teach yourself from books and videos but a bit of personal help from somebody who can actually play would help greatly. Good luck to you and don't be put off if you can't play like Jimi hendrix after a couple of weeks!

You could to a certain extent. If you go to a music shop and tell them that you would like to teach yourself, I'm sure that they could give you some of the basics and send you away with some decent books.
