Between October and Febuary is best the further North you can get the better, also away from any light source.
Have sailed in the Barents Sea off the North Cape of Norway and the sight is FANTASTIC!

I have seen them as for south as Northern Texas, but the best by far were in Nova Scotia and Northwestern Maine. Pretty much anywhere north 50 degree parallel in the early winter is gives you a good chance, but the closer you get to the arctic circle the better your chances are.

Unfortunately for your current holiday plans, now is a pretty damn good time to go.

My friends have just gone to Lapland to get married and then see them straight afterwards - how romantic!

There must be other places though....

I saw them in December in Finland, when I was above the arctic circle. It was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen!
