Because he wanted to! As the Attorney General, he is responsible only to the President and if he chose to fire the attorneys and the President didn't have a problem with it then it is no body's business.

All the presidential want to be's are just looking for any excuse to get their name in the paper for any reason. The press unfortunately plays up any kind of BS that will sell papers and air time whether it has any merit or not.

The thing is, it doesn't matter why. The US Attorneys serve at the discretion of the president. It is his constitutional prerogative to hire/fire them as he sees fit.

This is a tempest in a teapot.
