It's not necessarily a cultural thing so much as it is a patriarchy thing. It is a form of sexual control and sexual oppression. Women will remain chaste and only have sex when their husband wants. Its a 'built in' form of a chastity belt. Women are not allowed to have pleasure from sex, only men. If they had pleasure they would seek it out and become promiscuous which is frowned upon in male dominated societies.
I mean right now in the US they have 'purity balls' so that little girls pledge to their fathers to remain virgins until marriage. Its not nearly to the extreme that FGM (female genital mutilation) but it is a form of sexual control.

A lot of the women in the culture know the dangers of female mutilation. However, cultural beliefs die hard, and it is so engrained in these women's heads that they feel forced to get their daughter mutilated as well. But, well meaning volunteers (mostly from western countries) who are trying to change these people's beliefs are actually making mutilation stay in the culture. I read a journal article that said: the culutres who practice this feel so threatened that their culture is being invaded, that they want to keep this practice just to be stubborn.

Do not mix up between circumcision and mutilation. Circumcision is a simple nick cut to the clitoris to ensure proper draining of piss fluid while mutilation is a total removal of clitoris. Almost the same concept to male circumcision that would avoid gathering of any fluid. It's hygenic purpose.

yes, it guarantees they are 'pure', but that also depends on the form of FGM (female genital mutilation) they endure. some are simple, some kills them.
it is interesting to note that some (SOME) women are pro FGM, there are accounts of women who were 'saved' as children by well meaning organisations and later killed, or can't find husbands are abandoned terribly in their societies. I'm sure that if cultural views were changed these women would embrace our way of seeing things. It is usually a female relative who holds the little girls down as they are butchered. it really has to change.
interesting side note - why do we still circumcise our little boys?

I think the main purpose to it if I am not mistaken is to assure fidelity towards her husband, not sure why they do not wait until the marriage? guess they want to in a really sickening way assure that the girl remains pure and they think removing the area that gives a woman pleasure will accomplish this - which shows how little some people know about women, our pleasure center is mostly in our brain...

As I understand it, it always happens in third world countries where the ignorance is high. It's mostly in those countries where the girls are blamed for everything. It sounds like a cruel way to keep the girls in their place, yet there is a much eviler way know as honor killings. I don't like either; to me one is just as cruel as the other.
I see it being used as a wedge to stop girls going out there and looking for sex; some cultures believe that women always want it, sad but true.

This vile mutilation is a accepted in muslim international places, supposedly to maintain women straightforward in marriage. that's regularly achieved to youthful females leaving a small beginning for menstruation and intercourse, of course this later poses issues for childbirth. that's achieved with glass, sharp stones or maybe rusty tin cans - of course with out anaesthesia. that's carried out in Egypt, African international places, the middle East, and in private clinics in England. in case you seek 'lady genital mutilation' you will hit upon a wealth of tips about the venture.

happens in male dominant countries. It 's been outlawed but is still practiced. Apparently it also heightens the males pleasure during intercourse.

I believe the main purpose is to limit women's sexual pleasure, because then they apparently will not cheat on their husbands or have pre-marital sex.
Cutting off the clitoris, in terms of pleasure, is the equivalent of cutting of most, if not all, of the penis.
