Cramps for women are pretty much the same as when a guy exercises for a long time, such as running, so your muscle cramps up and it hurts. In women, when they are on their menstrual cycle, the lining of their uterus needs to shed the blood, so the uterus (which is a muscle) contracts repeatedly to loosen the lining and sqeeze it out. Cramps are common for women, and can be eased off with over the counter pain medicine like tylenol, and some females take birth control pills to lessen the cramping. Most cramps are actually the result of a blood clot that is being squeezed out of the uterus through a tiny hole, which is what makes it seem to hurt really badly.

It's kinda like someone punched you in the stomach about 75 times and then you did 2000 sit-ups...

They hurt.
