If the big bang happened from an explosion of matter from a central place, where it was super-condensed, why would gravity alone not keep it together? I mean, all the matter is there, so why would gravity not simply keep all that matter together, as it would've been the only area with spacetime that could have a pull?

My apologies if this is poorly written, I'm by no means anywhere near a scientist.

Thats sort of the missing link in the theory in my opinion. Its hard to imagine those amounts of force in action, but at what point did potential energy become more than gravitational resistance? Its hard to project those factors, however, with current study of quantum mechanics, and hawkins radiation escaping from black holes, it would seem that matter can be spontaniously (ejected or created) from a black hole despite gravity, so that may be the key... though I am not sure how or why as I have limited knowledge regarding quantum theory.

Im studying a cosmology module in my physics degree, and we have this argument almost every lesson, its the big (one of) question of cosmology, although its not why hasnt it, but "will it?" The reason it didnt stop it at first is because the universe expanded too fast for gravity to pull it back together again. YET. the universe is still expanding and at present it doesnt seem that there is enough mass in the universe to pull it all back together again (in what is termed a bigcrunch like a backwards bigbang), because data suggests the univers is expanding even faster than before, although this isnt entirely certain. All we do know is that its gonna be a fairly close "battle" because if there was too much the universe would only have lasted a short time - too short for life, and if the expansion was too quick, the matter would be spread too thinly for stars to ever form. Another big question is "why is the amount of mass in the univers 'just right'?"

Gravity, space and time all came together after the universe came into existence and not before. Before Big Bang what was there? No way to know since all models and equations collapse into a point singularity. Apparently some great energy was existing before and that resulted in the big bang. As the energy transformed into mass, gravity came into existence. Even now, the acceleration due to dark energy is more than the attraction due to gravity and our universe is expanding at a faster rate. This is what I understand from the several theories.

I think i understand. You have to remember that gravity is the curvature of spacetime caused my matter.

At the singularity, the force of gravity did not exist, as space/ time did not exist.

Anyway, gravity could still slow down the expansion of the universe, stop it, and then reverse it into something called the 'big crunch'.

Or, if there is precicely the amount of matter in the universe, it could stop expanding and be stable [highly unlikely]

Or, it could expand forever.

We dont yet know, but i would imagine it will be the first one.

Because a force greater than gravity overcame it! Inside black holes you will find infinite gravity and infinite time! If that doesn't make them some of the most interesting things to consider what does?
