Why is it that all British Commonwealth nations are FULL of millions and millions of SHEEP (referring to the actual wooly four legged animals) and lambs - while the US & other mainland America/Europe/&/Asia countries do not seem to have sheep, at least one never spots them when driving around. They have similar weather. Are there any necessity reasons why the UK + Ireland + N Z + the Falkland Islands, etc are great for keeping sheep?

And which countries don't keep sheep, and why not? How are they better off for having other things instead?

Of course the US has sheep! Go out to Montana, Wyoming and Idaho...you just haven't been all around the country; it's a big country. There is a preference for cattle but there are sheep in the States all over the place. In American history there have always been confrontations between cowmen and shepherds because cattle ranchers believe that sheep tear the grass up by the roots and ruin the soil--which is of course nonsense.

Some pastures are more suited to sheep. Hills and moors are better for sheep hence Scotland and New Zealand have plenty. More open pasture fields have more heffers as it's more suited to them.

Some industries also have just grown that way and therefore have a lot of knowledge about sheep/cow farming. It's not as easy as you might think.

Cattle are very land intensive animals but will eat virtually anything. They Can subsist on land that most people could not live on with out a lot of work and maintenance. Sheep require very good grazing land, have very little waste involved with their processing, are fairly easy to care for and even a small farmer can realize a profit on them.

The french burned all their sheep a few years ago....america don't have sheep because they can't sell lamb burgers. Asia prefers goats because they are easier to sacrifice. The welsh have them here because their councils can't afford roadside maintainance and with out sheep on the horizan Wales would be very bland. We have sheep in England to bring in the tourists (big sheep, devon) Ireland and
Scotland need sheep to keep their rustic weavers in wool and New zealanders just need sheep because they are lonely...probably.

I think it is for the fact that sheep as a selling product are cheaper and the poorer of the countrys use them because of that reason.

I would go for sheep because they are more gentle lovers, cows tend to abandon you once they get what they want
