I know exactly what you're talking about. I actually posted a similar question a couple weeks ago to see if anyone out there could actually use the words correctly because i was losing faith in the intelligence of people. I mean, they are every day words that are simple to use, but I am constantly seeing people use the words wrong.
I think the problem is that they either just don't get it, or they don't care that they're using it incorrectly. The sad thing about it all is that I've known people who have english as their second language & their grammar is near perfect. Whereas people here who have english as their first language are constantly mutilating the whole damn thing.
It's sad!
I agree with Shauna above me... I hate it when the words loose/lose choose/chose are used backwards as well. It's so easy to differentiate the words, but they constantly mess it up!

I'm very well educated, but still have homonym problems, and spelling problems. I get in a hurry and type to fast. The spell check on this sight doesn't check grammar. So if I use there instead of their it won't catch it, and neither will I, unless I take the time to proof read.
I have to agree though, that there are quite a few people in this country who apparently never made it past 4th grade English.

I know what you mean. Have we stopped teaching grammar in our schools or something? I must admit that I can't even be bothered reading some questions due to numerous spelling and grammar mistakes.

Yes, as well as "they're". There are so many grammatical errors all over YA that sometimes I have to take a little break. You know what really bugs me? People who use "loose" instead of "lose", or vice versa. Yikes!!

Don't forget they're. I find myself making the mistakes sometimes because I'm not concentrating.

My guess is that they don't care. I've heard a lot of people say "Well, I'm not in school, so why should I spell/write/speak properly?"

I'm amazed how many people say "Haven't went" instead of "Haven't gone". Public Schools are awful...

For the same reason that 80% of the people on this website spell "does" as "dose". They are either illiterate, six years old and can't spell, or both.

It is the way some minds are wired. I do not have a problem with the 'there"s but I always get the "threw"s backwards.
