I would definately not "just turn up the tv". This person needs help, but you have to be careful about who you report it to, and if you ever speak with your neighbour and feel you would be able to approach them about it, by giving them a phone number or something that would be good.

But if the abuse has been going on for a while the situation may be more complicated.

If you really want to help your neighbour you can do a search on the internet for helplines and speak to a few as they may advise you the best ways to help your neighbour.... the police don't always help situations, but that's just in my experience.

Please don't just ignore your neighbour though, regardless of whether you get on or not.

Well, if it was as easy as reporting it and knowing the problem will be solved, I think everyone would do it. You see, when you report, in most cases the abused will cover for the abuser. Then it leads to the police leaving and nothing being done. And it will keep happening. Sadly, if the problem is not solved yet, it is because the abused won't turn the abuser in. In order to have the police actually DO something about it, you must have SOLID proof. Until then you are wasting your time.

Just tell the police that you can hear a lot of loud noises coming from your neighbours house -
#1 you find it hard to get some peace and quite, and #2 you are quite concerned about what is going on in that house...
Try and catch the perpatrator making the noises (obviously not in person you are not a detective and this would be rediculous) , record it or something then report it - but I'd only suggest that if it keeps going on and no one does anything...
I would do something at least before it's too late, he/she could end up dead if you don't.

Personally speaking I would report this to the relevant authorities even if it turned out not to be the case.

I could not turn a blind eye and would rather put up with my neighbour not speaking to me for reporting what I thought was abuse at the time.

Just try and get your facts right first that's all.

Hi, My first thought would be for the victim, and report it, but the person being abused must want it to stop first, ??? as they would have to admit they are being abused, daft I know but , how many will go against their abusers, try and see that person on there own and let them know you are aware of what is happening and they don,t have to put up with it and if they want any support you will be pleased to help like if it happens again you will call the police for them., Hoping they are not dead by then.

Better to report it - especially if they are a child. If they are over eighteen, maybe they would need to make a statement before anything could happen to stop the abuse.

At least by reporting it you are able to give yourself some peace of mind, knowing that at least you tried. The Police or Social Services would be the way forward.

Definitely report it - you would want someone to report it if you were the victim. You may also want to check with the victim and see why they are putting up with the abuse. A lot of times they think no one cares and they are so scared of the abuser they don't know where to go.

I think I would have a moral obligation to do something about it. I would talk to the party who is being abused first and let them know that there is a way out. Leave. I would even offer to help out in any way I could as long as it was within my reach.

Ring 999. Would you ignore it if you knew a child or animal was been ill-treated? Or an old bloke being knocked about? NO!

i would try to talk to whoever was being abused but if it still continued i would call the proper authorities...

no one should have to go through that and if more people got involved when they knew it was going on, i think some of it would stop...
