I recently built a basement bedroom with a decorative woodstove in it. I didn't insulate the drywall ceiling because I wanted the woodstove to heat the upstairs floor. The drywall ceiling looks great, but any time anyone walks around upstairs or moves a chair or anything, it sounds like a drum in the room downstairs. Is there anyway to insulate without taking down the entire ceiling. The foam sprays I've seen don't expand enough and are expensive. Any ideas?

Spray in insulation will not work in this situation. I have not seen any DIY equipment for this type project either. You may be able to use blown in insulation. It will require cutting some holes in the drywall for access though.

I have to agree with answer one, and if spray in/blow in are the choices you'll likely have to repair whatever size holes are needed in the process.

Certainly there are other methods, more labor intensive, more costly, and are probably NOT what I'd do. IE: dropping the current ceiling and adding foam or batting above the drop,,,BUT if your ceiling is high enough certainly doing a drop and add acoustical tile ceiling with insulation above to deaden sound is another alternative.

Obviously most of what you'll do will compromise any effective heat exchange
