If you want to buy-now-and-get-now then you're prtty limited... go to PC World if you have no better shop around. Comet are not great for computers, Maplin are way pricey, non-chain shops can't compete on price.

£600 will get you a middling system... fine for general stuff, fine for simple games, not up to leading edge games, should probably have a DVD burner and >100Gb disk, may have a separate graphics card instead of on-board, will have probably 17-19" LCD screen, may have a printer. You'll have to pick and choose from the models as you won't get it all for £600. Go for non-major-brand as you get more bang for your bucks and generally more generic (and upgradable) components.

Get a paper, look at Dell adverts and PC World won't be far adrift from that.

I don't like PC world, their salesmen are technical dopes and push the (way overpriced) after market warranty crap. Their technical support is worth spit. But if you want it *now* then PC World may be where you have to go.

Again, unless you really know nothing about computers DO NOT take their extended warranty. That's where they make the real profits on PC sales.

Or check out Lidl... a pretty nifty Athlon dual core laptop for £399 I think this week. 15" screen. Not sure how tough it will be... but it's there as an option.
