If your home is subsidized by the government (think rural housing, HUD, etc), then YES, it is illegal. However, you can have roommates who just help out with the utilities!!

No, so long as you keep to the capacity of your household.
For example: If you have a three bedroom home and you put six people in one room, that is illegal.

It depends on the zoning where you live. If you aren't zoned as a rental property, then yes it's illegal.

Zoning determines that. Many specify that one family homes must be occupied by family units only, not by individuals.
