1. "passage migrants", anadramous and catadramous species, e.g many Petromyzonidae, Salmonidae and Anguilla spp.
2. Freshwater spp. which, often seasonally, penetrate into low salinities for feeding. Many may be displaced into the estuary by spates.
E.g. Carrassius carassius, Leuciscus, leuciscus, Thymallus thymallus
3. Marine species which penetrate the mouth or lower reaches of estuaries as opportunist feeders. E.g. Squatina squatina, Comger conger, Scomber scombrus
4. Estuarine fish that sppend most or all of their lives in euryhaline conditions.
"True" estuarine fish which spend all their lives in estuaries e.g. Pomatoschistus microps and Fundulus confluentus (Marsh killifish)
Estuarine fish which leave the estuaries for brief periods, usually for breeding
e.g. Platichthys flesus (in southern estuaries), Brevoortia tyrannus (menhaden), Morone americana (white perch)
5. Marine species which use estuaries as nursery grounds. These are dominant members of the ichthyofauna of Atlantic coast estuaries.
e.g. many clupeids (Clupea harengus, C. sprattus), serranids (Dicentrarchus labrax) and Heterosomata (Solea solea, Paralichthys dentatus).
6. Freshwater and marine species which enter estuaries to breed.
e.g Galaxias spp. and Pseudopleuronectes americanus.

Estuarys hold fish that are able to endure very brackish water. Many sharks and rays and mullet, for example, exploit this niche.
