Annie's Song" was written as an ode to Denver's then-wife, Annie Denver (Annie Martel) of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. While hiking through a state park in nearby New Ulm, Minnesota, Denver started to marvel at the beauty around, and, thinking about his wife, penned the song in a few minutes. The song has since become a wedding standard and an expression of love for many people, due to its grand imagery and the fact it could apply to anyone (Annie is not mentioned by name in any part of the song).
Edit: That's the joy of the song...it can be about ANYONE! My spouse, my mother, my grandmother...heck, it could be about my cat...but it's supposed to move you to tears about the one you love them most.
