My daughter went to emergency and was told that she broke her wrist. I took her to the orthopedic surgeon the next week when the swelling was going down to get a cast. He said it was a sprain, not a break. After that she begain brusing really bad and is still in a lot of pain. I wonder if I should get a third opinion.

I'd say you should get a third opinion. Your daughter could have a growth plate fracture which are very common in kids and don't usually show up on X-rays. I'm 13 and I have had 11 fractures. I have had experience with doctors who told me it was a sprain and it turned out to be a growth plate fracture. So if she is in a lot of pain go somewhere else just to be sure. If you went somewhere where they treat a lot of adults I suggest looking for someone who treats mostly children and teens.

If your daughter went to emergency and was told that she broke her wrist, then I'd get a different opinion than the one the ortho gave you. They do xrays on bones in the ER to determine if a bone is broken or just sprained. HOWEVER, to answer your question more pointedly, YES, you can have massive bruising and swelling from a sprain. This happens b/c when you injure an area that badly, there are many tiny blood vessels that are broken causing bleeding under the skin's surface. There is also damage to ligaments and tendons w/ a sprain so, there can be lots of swelling.

My suggestion is obtain the xrays from the ER and go to a different doc if you aren't satisfied with what the ortho guy told you.

I have sprained an ankle and had a lot of bruising. The swelling was so bad that they could not see in the x-ray I if there were any bone chips. So I was told to come back after all the swelling went away. My ankle was put in an air cast. I never went back to check for bone chip.

Did the doctor take an x-ray ? Was the wrist immobilized ? If not I would see another doctor.

1. Sprains can be as severe an injury as a fracture or worse
2. The brusing you see indicates hemorrhage of small vessels under the skin...because of the injury
3. The Doc you spoke with is an ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON...I do not understand what part of his advice you do not "like"
4. I am sorry your daughter is in pain..but of course it hurts...she has an injury! Tell the MD's about her pain, perhaps they can help with meds or treatment.
5. I am not trying to sound like a $#%^...I know it is frustrating to see your kids hurting...but again, the man is an orthopedic surgeon. He knows better than you or I.

When I sprained my ankle it swelled up and started turning shades of purple and yellow it was sore for about 4days before it started felling better and after about a week the swelling was all gone and started itching like crazy . If in doubt I would get a second opinion.

Yes, get a third opinion. After a sprain once the bruising and swelling go away they stay away.
