there is an old saying that 5% of the people favor communism and the other 95% don't know what it is. In theory communism is a good thing, sharing wealth equally and fairly among the everyone seems ideal, but in practice such as in n. korea the results haven't been good. so now w/ the news the pres hugo chavez is planning to take land from the rich to give to the poor in an effort to equalize the people, my question is could communism exist today or has the u.s. govt been completely succesful in stamping it out.

It does exist today.

China
Cuba

But not with the intent of Marx.

Chavez is a socialist, and he will fail (look at what is happening the economy of Venezuela right now 22% inflation etc) , socialism is similar to commmunism, it sounds good on paper. But the reality of human nature is that we don't believe that everyone should be treated equally. I'll use a school metaphor.

You work on a project (say chemistry) with another student. You do all the work & your partner is a screw-off.

The project turns out well because of all your hard work.

Do you both DESERVE an "A"?

As a society, we recognize that we need to have compassion for those who cannot care for themselves as well as our standard of living dictates, but this is in direct conflict with our capitalist nature which says we should get what we earn.

Religions try to address this, but largely fail.

The POSSIBILITY of communism???? My friend, if anyone believes that communism died when the Berlin wall came down, they are naive.

Communism is very much alive and well. Chavez is just one example.

Right here in America, the global warming/ecology crowd is made up almost entirely of socialist/communist.

The price we must pay as civilians, while our troops are sacrificing their bodies and lives in Iraq, is to be ever vigilent against the internal threats that we have, so that our men and women have a country to return to at all.

While they are watching the front lines, who is watching their backs???

Communism could exist. But who really cares? I don't think it will exist as we knew it during the Cold War. Hugo Chavez is dependent on oil revenue to implement his communist/socialist policy. The USA buys most of his oil and we refine 90% of his oil. Therefore, we control Hugo. He can say all the nasty mean spirited things he want to, but we basically our in control of his economy. That's why he doesn't like us. Don't worry - one sharp decline in the price of oil will put him out of business. Should the US choose, we could stop purchasing his oil and put him out of business immediately.

provide them day, and a few how Bush would be the poster boy for this one. Obama will stand there and say, Your doin a hell of activity Brownie, then he will smirk and stroll away, whilst observing fondly at Hugo's photograph.

You are delusional.
"in theory communism is a good thing"
That is always one of the most laughable statements I hear out of the mouths of the uninformed. Since when is theft, robbery, and slavery a "good thing"? Why are those who are lazy and uninspired intitled to the fruits harvested by those who are willing to work hard and develope their potential? And why stop at money? Why shouldn't your neighbor be entitled to have a piece of your wife if she is more attractive than yours? Why not body parts? After all, if your neighbor drinks himself silly every day, and then needs a new liver, shouldn't he be able to DEMAND that the state force you onto the operating table to share some of yours?

Communism and Socialism are evil and without merit. Hugo Chavez needs to assume room temp ASAP.
