Especially liberals, it seems, are the most scared of guns, and military service, and war. After all, they appear to be the most active forces in gun control, draft scare tactics, and anti-war demonstrations.

What is so scary about the gun? Please tell me that there is more to this than a simple impulsive reaction to the loud bang and sudden kickback or the brainwashing of teachers or the affects of cinema.

Why aren't people more scared of evil people? .. after all, evil people are the ones who use firearms to support their criminal activities.

All-in-all, excellent feedback so far and much for me to consider from your answers.

But painting with a broad stroke can make good paintings, too, Chrissy; to say say otherwise is to paint with a broad stroke yourself about broad stroke painting. :) Please keep in mind, though, that I said *especially* liberals, not *all* liberals.

Did I just hear the argument that resistance to crime/threats should avoided lest an escalation by the offending party lead to greater harm? I'm afraid that a lot of people changed their mind about that philosophy after 9/11/01 WTC, Pentagon, and Pennsylvania terrorist attacks.

I can't believe that someone actually questioned the fact that guns don't kill people. How common is it for a gun to fire (much less kill a person) without human intervention of any kind? Everytime I see a handgun on a flat, level table, all it does is just sit there and do nothing. Go figure, huh?

mcd, anti-war demonstrations reveal a liberal aversion to taking up arms against another country.

Iran has made her evil intentions toward the U.S.A. VERY CLEAR. This issue is about evil people of the militant, Islamic radical variety. Like a gun, a nuclear bomb does not initiate the the targeting or detonation sequence on its own.

Because society has built up guns to be scary. And even though it's the person that kills, the gun is an instrument in killing, so people will be afraid of them. Also it's pretty scary to have a gun pointed at you. Guns are associated with crime, death, killing etc. and those are things people are afraid of.

It's not only liberals that are afraid, they are more towards getting rid of them. They think that having guns around civilians automatically equals a higher rate o f crime. Which is a dumb idea since criminals will always find a way to get guns no matter what kind of ban is placed on them.

People are scared of "evil people." But the gun is an instument they use, and without the gun, a evil person is not as deadly. It's so easy to kill or harm someone with a gun. Just know the basic mechanics of it, pull the trigger. It's a very detatched method of killing so it probably wouldnt be as mentally jarring to the killer as say, stabbing someone repeatedly with a knife would be.

I'm not scared of guns at all. I'm tech. a liberal and my husband is and has been Active duty Military for 17 yrs.
Am I scared of others with guns, yep! lol Because some people are truly evil. Do I believe we should maintain the right to bear arms, Absolutely. Because first and foremost, I believe in the Constitution. I believe in our Country, and it is no different than a family. We may disagree but we will always have each others best interest in mind.
I don't believe in any of the things you stated. Painting with a broad stroke only gives you a bad painting.

That's a really good question.....
Basically they are afraid of them because they have not seen them before and are literally taught to be scared of them(through movies, serials, parents, other close people).
This is the reason people who know about guns(they know so good because the own it), like cops, military, few poliitcians and lawers, etc. are not really afraid of guns, especially if its in the hands of a person that can be trusted not to shoot.
In reality there are many articles (cars, knives, unsafe high areas, etc.)that can proove lethal, but the 'gun' is only meant to kill(or badly injure) and has no other use, nor is it seen everyday. On the other hand the other 'articles that can proove lethal', are not meant to kill or injure but have their own practical use.

I see your point, but I look at it a different way.

With the anti-war stuff and that kind of thing, I don't think it has so much to do with fear of guns and things that go boom, it's more a feeling of being civilized to the point of being appalled by war.

I'm not really "scared" of guns, but I won't have one in my home. Not every single shooting happens by evil or bad people. Sometimes it's self-defense, or an accident.

However, every single shooting in the history of gunpowder has happened when a gun was involved. Whether you feel it should happen or not, any thinking person can see that if there were no guns, there would be no shootings. There would, of course, be other forms of violence, but not shootings.

Guns can escalate violence. If someone owns a gun for their own personal protection, they are more likely to use it or draw it, forcing the other person to react in a similiar way. Some criminal situations (burglary being an example) would not end in violence if the victim had not threatened the offender. I'm not blaming the victim, in fact I will probably own a gun in the future, but it is true that owning a gun increases the likelihood of one being involved in a violence.

Nonsensical. Why don't you rightwingers let Iran have the atomic bomb? After all, bombs don't kill people, people kill people.

No question here, just a handout from the NRA.

Oh, bringing in the "antiwar demonstrations"- nice touch, that. Working on an argument that Bush invaded Iraq to uphold you "right" to bear arms?

Because people don't want to believe that people are like that. Which menas that they themselves are like that we dont want to face the evil in all of us so the chose to attack the instrament rather then the real problem because to go after the evil person they wold have to face themselves and people don't want to doa that.

"Everyone knows" guns don't kill people? You've taken an ad campaign by the NRA and called it truth. I don't think that's necessarily a truth.
