Change the security and privacy settings on your web browser. Tools->internet options->privacy tab. Under it their should be a check box 'block pop-ups'. This will only block a small amount, but it helps. Next go into the security tab. Highlight the globe image, representing the internet, and then there should be a button on the page to adjust your security level. Raise it up a bit. You can also customize your security settings by selecting what you will allow and not allow. Be very careful about accepting cookies, spyware uses cookies to get information about you.

Spyware has a tendacy to create a lot of pop-up windows, so if you can't seem to get rid of the pop-ups chances are your PC is infected with spyware.

You should always make a habbit of getting rid of spyware on your pc. The spyware sweeper I use, which I think is excellent is called Webroot I bought it at BestBuy, but you can probably get a better deal online.

Don't download any free web browser tools, they are loaded with spyware! Be wary of any pop up windows telling you 'your PC is infected download free software to get rid of spyware' many of these programs are spyware themselves.

Popup blockers, such as the Yahoo and Google toolbars, will only stop web based popup advertising. They can help somewhat but will do nothing to stop popups on a computer that is badly infected with trojan downloaders that are contacting other computers to download and deliver the pop up ads.

Try a full cleaning and dis-infection routine, if you are getting excessive popups, or are getting popups even when you are offline.

This is the one I use (it will take some time).

1. Scan for virus and remove (free online scan) with BitDefender
http://www.bitdefender.com/site/home/

2. Scan for trojans, adware and spyware and remove (free online scan) with Ewido
http://www.ewido.net/en/

--------------------------------------------------
And after your computer is fully cleaned of spyware I would suggest IE-SPYAD to prevent further problems, if you are using IE browser:

"IE-SPYAD adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers, marketers, and crapware pushers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer. Once you merge this list of sites and domains into the Registry, the web sites for these companies will not be able to use cookies, ActiveX controls, Java applets, or scripting to compromise your privacy or your PC while you surf the Net. Nor will they be able to use your browser to push unwanted pop-ups, cookies, or auto-installing programs on your PC."
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm

------------------------------------------------------
And if your popups say "Messenger Service" at the top Title Bar. Read Here:

Older versions of Windows (pre XP-SP2) can get "Messenger Service" popups which are caused by Microsoft leaving the almost never used Messenger Service enabled by default. These type of popups will have the words "Messenger Service" up top in the title bar. This was corrected in Windows XP- Service Pack 2.

Understand that the Windows Messenger Service is completely different from, and not in any way related to, "MSN Messenger", "Windows Live Messenger" "yahoo Messenger", or any other well-known instant messaging system. Therefore, disabling the Windows Messenger service will have no effect upon your use of any other instant messaging applications. They will continue to work without trouble.

To disable this service in older versions of Windows use the free, Shoot The Messenger from:
http://www.grc.com/stm/ShootTheMessenger.htm

Good luck.

Unfortunatly there are some pop ups that will get by. You can always install a third party free pop up blocker, but be careful, you get what you pay for and most are very sensitive these days and your favorites sites can often be blocked.

Just do a quick google search for "free pop up blocker" and you will see alot of choices.

You need to install one firewall.The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out.
http://www.comodogroup.com/ - Comodo firewall.

You need to install one anti virus;
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ -AVG anti virus or
http://www.avast.com - Avast Antivirus

http://www.bitdefender.co.uk/site/Main/view/Download-Free-Products.html - Bitdefender 8 doesn't run in the background and can be used as a second back up anti virus.

You need all these anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com
Plus;
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware

And these are useful utilities;
http://www.mozilla.com/ - Firefox web browser.

https://www.grc.com - Shields Up security site, check your firewall works.
https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

Remember to update and run all of you anti malware programs at least once a week.

Use Firefox and remember to enable the pop up blocker.
If an anti spyware scan finds an infection and can't seem to remove it (it comes back), then you may need to switch off System Restore as back up files may be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.
