Why do so many musical artists bother to perform on TV programmes if they are just going to mime? More to the point, why do TV shows bother to pay singers/bands to be on their production is they are just going to mime? They may as well just play the CD.

It helps the show they're on if they get big names and popular singers/bands to perform, because people like live audiences.

It helps the singer/band because it gets them exposure.

It's the same kind of reason as singers put on concerts: a live performance, even a fake one, is more interesting than just listening to a cd

Its actually often the tv shows that make the artists mime as its easier to do the sound engineering that way. There is nothing like a live performance tho and thankfully most artistes still do live shows with no miming at thier concerts.

A lot of the time the bands that lip-sync can't sing anyway so it's no real loss. Also I suppose for some TV shows having a backing track may be more cost effective.

Many acts these days haven't paid their dues by playing actually live in crappy pubs and clubs infront of hard to please audiences. That's why TV shows won't take a chance on them playing live. Until the public at large stop buying records by manufactured bands such as Take That, Boyzone and the like, not to mention the winners of those dreadful shows like Pop Idol and X Factor, things will never change.

I saw Madonna at a huge concert, over 100,000 there in Leeds and later found out she mimed to a few of the records.

The excuse from her management company was it was to hard to do the dance routines and sing at the same time.

If artists as huge a Madonna are doing it in a huge concert, there seems to be no end to who will.

it used to be funny years ago when top of the pops was on and many of the artists were caught out miming they all do it because they are no good singing live.

It's "Lip-sync" but I understand what you are saying. I want to see you sing, not hear the record
