Why is it when an unknown person has sex with an underage girl - the are condemned to be a "sex offender"; HOWEVER, when a famous person does the same thing (Errol Flynn, Kelsey Grammar, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis)... They are - at the worst - eccentric and it only helps their career in the end?

Hollywood and celebs get to do what ever they want. Their is one case like this where is it not true Roman Polanski had sex with then 13-year old Samantha Geimer. He currently lives in France, where he became a citizen, and if he ever comes back to the US he will be arrested. You may know him from the recent film "The Pianist" (2002) He won best director and of course he did not come back t the US to get hs award. He also directed "Chinatown" with Jack Nicholson. ou can always Wikipedia Roman to get more info. But he had sex with a minor.

Money has a lot to do with it, BUT, the age of consent for sex is actually only 18 in a few states, in most it's 16 or 17. It's not the same as the age of majority- i.e., adulthood.

Further, ages of consent in most places in the times of the people you mentioned, with the exception of Kelsey Grammar, were much younger than they are now. A lot of places had ages of consent at 12, 13 and 14 less than 50 years ago.

Here is a link to current age of consent by state:

I think that you have answered your own question. With the people you listed, it happened years ago. It is far less likely to happen or be tolerated these days.
