Yes.
It was developed by Monsanto Chemical co., specifically for the Houston Astrodome.
It has been greatly improved since the first and more durable. Presently, the cushion backing is several inches in thickness. The first was only a couple inches in thickness. Zippers were sown to strips of the original, permitting installation and removal. Bear in mind that in off season, the Dome was used for other purposes. Rodeo, dirt biking, etc.

No....they tried grass but it would not take so they came up and may have actually invented the truf that is called "astro turf".....something like that!
