Someone said that to me today. Don't get me wrong, I admired her blunt talking, but at the same time I wanted the ground to swallow me up.

You know that happens to me all the time. In Japan, it's perfectly fine to tel someone they look bad, have put on weight or are pretty spotty at the moment. I love walking in to class and having my students inform me of the new pimple I have growing on my nose... Such a confidence booster.
But to be honest Ive never really had it done that much to me in England. The times I have had it done, I find replying with a simple "Thankyou" (guilt trip) works wonders.
Either that or "Not being funny love, but have you see the state o'you this morning"

Most of the time if I look terrible I feel terrible and usually in a sarcastic mood, I will say, thank you, it was the look I was going for today, and walk away. Now if it happend and I feel fine and I think I look pretty good, then I'd feel like you, wanting the ground to swallow me up.

I would look in the mirror and see, they may be trying to tell you that you need to fix your hair or add more / take away some makeup. I wish someone had told ME that back in 2000. We were having our church pictures done, it was the last day, and I hadn't felt well and wasn't that day because of a gallbladder problem. I went ahead and had a picture made so that I could be represented in the church directory. Despite makeup, my picture looked like "death warmed over." My fault...not the photographer's.

Someone told me that the other day too, cos I've lost quite a bit of weight recently (when I didn't need to).

Actually, it's quite a compliment when you think about it. If you looked terrible all the time no one would dare say anything - so you must look pretty good usually.

I would probably agree with them, too.

But it is a hard one to swallow.

But she was a bit in your face. I am sure there are better ways of expressing concern.

Next time you see her, tell her she looks like she is at death's door.

I usually look terrible because I never sleep so I just say "yeah, I went to bed at 1 last night" or "Yeah, I'm tired" Or "yeah, I've been stressed over such and such". I just give a short explaination for why I look like I'm gonna drop dead and they leave it at that.

My sister often tells me exactly what she thinks of how i look! we're very different, she naturally very blonde, i'm naturally very dark haired, and we dress differently too. she's not said terrible in so many words but phrases like 'you look like you're going to a funeral, who died?' or 'wow that colour makes you look washed out' or even 'urgh what are you wearing those horrible old glasses for?' was one i got a few weeks ago when my contacts were hurting me! i tend to ignore her as best i can! i'm done with making excuses!

Everyone keeps telling me that every other day, ever since I lost my fabulous figure and started gaining weight!! I smile at whoever tells me that and inform them that this is the 'sign of prosperity'. At home, I make sincere efforts to lose weight because I know they want me to look good again. Don't take it badly dear, nobody wants to be cruel to you!! They want you to be chirpy, bubbly and look fabulous!! Why don't you look at yourself, think over it and try a little bit more?

Depends how you looked and felt at the time. You can look terrible when you're ill; but not when you're done up to the nines and some one's just being catty.

Oooh, straight back at'cha!

Depends on how well I knew the person. And if I felt terrible in the first place.
