I don't know about the Latin part, but Shakira's belly dance teacher is the American bellydance superstar Bozenka and she helped choreograph Hips Don't Lie.

While Shakira is a very talented dancer, a lot of people dance even better than her after one year of bellydance classes.

Anyone can learn to shake their hips. It makes no difference what shape or nationality you are. You can shimmy any muscle in your body if you can move it, your stomach, your calf muscle, shoulders, your butt...

Stand with your feet a little less than hip width apart and your feet flat on the floor.

Alternate slowly moving the left hip upwards and then the right hip. You can do this either with your knees driving the movement or with your oblique muscles.

Once this becomes comfortable, do it in time to music. Make the movement smaller and faster until you can do a good vibration. Always stay in control, don't just shake otherwise it just looks spastic.

Most of the hip movement comes from knee action, and it's accentuated by isolating the resultant hip motion from the ribcage. In principle, the actions when broken down into what each body part does are simple, though it takes a good deal of practice to put it all together well. Watch some Rumba in the Latin part of a ballroom dance program. It's the same motion but done slowly. Better still, take some lessons, and you'll impress your friends in no time.

Shakira Shaking Her ***

Some moves are latin in origin while others have their basis in middle eastern dance (bellydance). She mixes styles quite a bit so both come through in her works. I can't speak for the latin side but the middle eastern part is more from the thighs. Here is a page that has descriptions of various bellydance moves.

The best way to learn how to shake your hips like that is of course to take both latin and middle eastern dance classes.

Shakira is a wonderful performer! I think she was just born to dance, also with that splendid voice. Some people are so gifted and it is definately for the enjoyment of others when they perform. They share their gift with others, and we sit here in amazement as to how it is they are so talented.

That is a belly dancing move.
Hip thrusts to shake the "coins" on the belt to create music.
Traditionally it is believed to create wealth for the dancer and it really works in this case!

She is an awesome dancer and entertainer.
