I recently purchased (last week) a Panasonic and so far am very pleased with it. I do NOT recommend a Go-Video brand. That one gave me more than headaches and only lasted a year. I did not want to mess with sending it in on warranty because I simply was fed up with the brand. Don't go there! Before that, I had a Toshiba and had trouble with the recorder on that, too. I think the Panasonic is the "ticket" for me!!!

As for the DVR's such as Ti-Vo, etc. (the ones that do not use discs, but have a hard drive instead):

I thought about that but then realized that for a Ti-Vo you must pay monthly subscription costs like you do a TV cable. (in ADDITION to your TV cable.) From what I gathered is that you must have it hooked up to a phone line in order to get the TV schedules downloaded to your system. If you are like me, and don't have a phone line anywhere near the TV, they say they send an extra long phone cord that you can weekly connect it to a phone and then disconnect it after it downloads the info. Doing that once a week? Well, that just seems like a BIG hassle to me....more than I would want to mess with. And I did not want to add to my monthly bills, either.

To get the DVR's that cable companie's sometimes supply would mean upgrading your cable services (and bill) to cover the digital format.

For what I am using a DVD recorder for, I figured I would stick with the basics....and got one that takes multiple kinds of discs, as well as having a VCR with it.

Don't get a DVD recorder: the whole technology fell flat on its face to a little thing called TiVo. And besides, the DVD format is rapidly becoming obsolete, so if you're considering a DVD recorder for the purpose of preserving your home videos and what not, you'll regret buying one when Blu-ray takes its place. Get TiVo, or any other brand of DVR (but TiVo is best): you'll be glad you did.

I have two of them. A Toshiba unit and a Cyberhome one. The cyberhome unit is not reliable at all and I could not recommend it. The Toshiba unit is fairly simple to use but not as simple as a VCR. I have had no problems with the Toshiba and would recommend to anyone who wants an inexpensive DVD recorder.
