If it is his back that is giving him problems he should see a chiropracter. Its either to do with is spine, the mucles or both. I got a very bad back from not adjusting my desk seat properly. I had restricted movement in my lower spine and I had been using heat packs- which I shouldnt have done. I was told to use ice packs or a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a teatowel.
After the chiropracter examined me and adjusted me slightly I was much better. best to get it checked out as you dont want to do more damage.
A few weeks ago i was experiencing pain again in my lower right side so i went back to the the chriopracter and I had sprained a vertabrae on my right side so my left side was compensating for it (hence the pain on my left)
Get him to see a chiropracter and they can be more detailed than a GP. They may suggest treatment (which is relatively painless). If he is working in a warehouse he shouldnt be lifting anything as this can aggrevate it. Maybe getting a back support might help once he is cured to make sure he doesnt injure it by putting too much strain on it too quickly.

He needs a massage therapist who knows how to work the muscles in the FRONT of the neck and also into the throat region.
Massaging the back of the neck will provide little relief since it is unlikely this is where the pain is actually coming from.
Damaged muscles on the front of the cervical spine (longus capitis/longus coli) refer pain to the back of the neck, so it's a common mistake to believe the back of the neck needs attention.
Going into the throat with fingers is a bit scary, and certainly discomforting. It takes someone who absolutely knows what they are doing, but this may be the only way to get relief from whiplash.

I know it sounds silly, but just lie on the floor, with your hands on your side.
You may won't to roll a small towel and place it under the small of the back to give lumbar support.
But lie on the floor for 20 mins a day, I found it helped with all my back problems. Also try to make sure he walks with good posture, as when you do it put less stress on your back.
I may be worthwhile to get referred to a physio who can help him with the back pain and give him advice and exercises to help strengthen his back

I think he needs time off work to rest his back! I had mild whiplash last year and that was bad enough. This sounds awful.
Maybe a trip to the doctor to ask his advice also.

drug= paracetamol and codeine but its not a long term answer as codeine can be quite addictive. He could try swimming if he has time, very good for back. If not acupuncture is very good, you can get it on nhs in some places, also good mattress and pilates type exercises are good

You shouldn't massage an injured back.
The only thing that will cure it is rest.
