To just do a task is to follow someone else's ideas and follow their pattern. Of course the big problem comes along when things doing go exactly as they are planned or set out. Plus, it is very boring just to follow someone else all of the time.
What critical thinking does is to allow the person to include their own ideas and to really figure things out. The question is, do you just want to follow along or do you want to think about things? Develop things? Formulate things? Come up with idea that is new and different? Come up with ideas that fit you rather than just to fit someone else?
Critical thinking is all about making connections between you and the book or movie or idea. It allows you to ask questions and to answer them. Why did this happen? What were the reasons behind it? What is the real meaning of it? What is going to happen next? How does this compare to other things? Where has this happened before or where is it leading?

Critical thinking skills will allow you to analyze the theme/plot/story of the book and recognize and find any flaws, errors, or propaganda contained within the story.
Critical thinking skills will teach you about: non sequiturs, when the logic doesn't follow; will teach you about supposition, which is just a guess based on no or loose evidence (conspiracy theory).
Analying a book to death is also called 'exigesis'.
By being aware of your Critical Thinking Skills, you will write a tighter and more logical thesis or story. You will try to avoid the same mistakes you find in other peoples stories: like MOBY DICK, PRIDE AND PREDJUDICE or even A PEOPLE'S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES by Zinn.
So learning the logic and the logical fallacies found in Critical Thinking will be a life long skill that you will always use when you read or write or go to the movies.

You'll be able to pick out small details that are important. Also a lot of novels (especially Russian works) can really only be understood if you think about them critically. Critical thinking makes you wonder "Why did the author do this?" or "Could this be significant later in the story?" You'll also start looking for themes and symbols and recognize the common ones so when you're reading something you'll pick up on the details a lot quicker.

It allows you to see a much broader picture of things and to question rather than take everything as truth or fact.
When you are reading something and the hair on the back or your neck stands up -- or you find yourself reacting strongly -- those are the places you need to go back and examine -- there is something important there.......
Critical thinking is one of the most valuable skills you will ever develop.
