They were the epitome of what was wrong with music in the eighties. They were slick, insipid and the lyrics to Kyrie are enough to drive a sane man crazy. Fess up ! Someone bought them.

the two best songs of Mr. Mister, "Broken Wings" & "Kyrie" in the 80s was their best. naturally it had to be in the no.1 spot, Broken wings was so good that it has been used by so many, even Tupac.
In 2001, this song was sampled for a Tupac Shakur song on his posthumous album Until the End of Time',, for the title song.
In 2001, it was sampled and performed in Foxy Brown's Broken Silence album, on its title song.
In 2002, the song was featured in the game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on Emotion 98.3.
In 2004, Richard Cheese performed this live in Las Vegas on his album I'd Like a Virgin.
In 2005, Rick Springfield sang this song on his "tribute" album The Day After Yesterday as a duet with original vocalist Richard Page.
In 2006, it was covered by Clay Aiken on his CD A Thousand Different Ways.
Just released was a version by Joe Budden, who freestyles over the beat and keeps the hook of the song.
So it was good.

Kyrie on the other hand, had a mix of english & greek, thats why it can drive u crazy trying to figue it out.
The words to "Kyrie" were written by singer Richard Page while on tour with Adam Ant, and according to Page it is essentially a prayer The words "Kyrie eleison" translate from the Greek as "Lord have mercy" (or "O Lord, have mercy").

The song's lyrics cleverly uses the phrase "Kyrie eleison" which sounds more like the phrase "Kyrie lays on" when sung aloud:

"Kyrie eleison down the road that I must travel
Kyrie eleison through the darkness of the night"

The video for "Kyrie" features a poster for the Tears for Fears album Songs from the Big Chair, which was also a major success

I loved Mr. Mister!! Our high school choir even sang Kyrie at graduation. And what exactly was wrong with music in the 80's? There was a lot of great music back then, much better than some of the thinly-disguised disco retreads that pollute popular radio today.

actually, it has very little to do with who buys the albums, even back then. I has more to do with airtime and how much DJ's are willing to play something. Look at the last two songs from Fergie...can you actually tell the difference between them? They are the same melody, and practically the same lyrics(at least we know she can spell delicious and glamorous). But they play constantly on the radio.

I bought 'Broken Wings', but I'm in the UK, so can't be held responsible for them having no.1 hits in the US.
