That's not really good to have it open like that, you should be able to get a replacement part for it, until then I wouldn't turn on the computer.

Your machine and you will be just fine, and your friend is doing you a disservice. Computers don't emit any sort of harmful radiation, though some cathode-ray monitors would if they weren't thoroughly shielded. The cover on the computer is there to keep your hands out, and that's all.

Yeah, you're gonna die. Probably this afternoon.

Just kidding -- really there's nothing to worry about. If you can handle how ugly it is, the function won't do much. You'll get more dust inside the box, of course, and there's the chance of shock if you stick something in there, but you'll notice no difference in your life expectancy from it -- unless you worry so much that you perforate an ulcer or something.

Contrary to other the side of the computer is also there to assist in cooling the system. Even if you tape it in you should keep it covered this keeps dust out which can cause little dust bunnies to attach your memory and CPU.

If your worried about it put tin foil over it, computer do not emit that much radiation. If they emitted as much as your friend told you then the case would have to be made of lead, which it isnt!

ah jeez dude, get to a doctor now! You're probably already suffering from class 5D radiation burns but don't know it because they're invisible to the naked eye. Turn it off before it's too late!
