I guess it truly depends on the person, a person already know the consequences before he\she does something like smokes, a smoker knows the consequence it can cause, but a person still does it, i think it may be a sort of mental problem perhaps at the start of the problem, for instance taking drugs he\she started because he\she thought that life was not worth living anymore, a statement of used is "life is short, full fill it" But i think this people have already given up hope for a better life. a strategy to prevent this, is to program your mind that this things can stop a person from living a full life. Drugs, alcohol and tobacco's appeal is often peer pressure. People do it, others find it cool they all do it.

well i hope this answers your question

Easy hey, getting your essay ideas from Yahoo Answers! The main word is Abuse!!! I've tried perhaps all the different types of drugs/substances/herbs... that are available...its a question of mind of matter where you control how much of the substance to use & not let the substance use you.....even gambling is addictive...just as bad tho. If you have never tried any of them before, then you would not have expereinced the pleasure that is 'enjoyed' by the junkie...women are similar..some men are addicted to p u s s y...same thing.

Man 's nature is to seek pleasure, or happiness-- By every means.
Why do people resort to drugs, alcohol, or tobacco? Whichever be the drug of choice, [Any mind- altering or mood-changing substance is a DRUG!] people find it gives temporary relief from tension and gives a pleasurable feeling!
So, one resorts to it again, and again, to re-create the nice feeling. But soon it becomes an addiction........something that makes us unhappy, irritable, and off-mood until we resort to the drug again! Then, we feel happy---till we crave for it again!

Addiction could be to any of the above substances + food (over-eating) , sex (masturbation included!), gambling, or even watching TV! [Ask a mother trying to wean her 3 year old from the kid's favourite Cartoon program!!]

It is very VERY difficult to break the cycle of addiction without help from others.
The MOST effective help is from self-help groups like Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Nicotine Anonymous, Overeaters' Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, etc.by which the addictive person can keep away [NOT permanently, because the pattern of addiction is etched permamnently in the brain, despite being drug-free for years and years], but JUST ONE DAY AT A TIME! Any body can soothe or talk his mind to keep away from it JUST for TODAY! (Tomorrow we may have a drink, but that's another day: NOT today!) Tomorrow never comes! When I wake up next morning, it is again Today! So, let me keep away just for today! And life goes on..........just One day at a Time.
In this manner, I am an alcoholic who has stayed away (from even a drop ) alcohol for 25 years!
Thank God for AA.

where is the line between use and abuse? surely substance use in moderation, part of a controlled, informed choice, is not abuse?
