I've been saving for a while now with the view to buying a TVR Cerbera, but now that the company is russian owned and soon to be italian built, I've kind of lost the enthusiasm for them.

So with that in mind, what does £15k get me? It's purely a weekend car as I have a freelander for day to day activity. It needs to be suitably charismatic (so nothing japanese then!) and have either driver appeal. The idea of a V8 Cobra replica appeals, as does an Elise. Although I've found a Renault Sports Spider which has also taken my fancy.

Just not sure what else is out there for my money. Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Edit, Yep, I'll fully admit that jap cars are better built, but they just dont make me tick. The other reason is that as a weekend toy, i need a car I can keep for several years and retain a good resale value.

How about a Marcos - a new TRO will be outside your price range, but a used, Rover-engined Mantara (if you can find one) should be within it.

Or a Caterham or Westfield?

A used Noble is probably still outside your price range.

How about a Caterham??, It will give you far more raw driving pleasure than a Renault.. If it's the noise rather than the drive then a DAKS Cobra would be a good bet or save a bit more dosh and go for a Noble....

You are too quick to discount Japanese brands, my friend. The TVR's I have seen (only a few) look like they were assembled by hardware store clerks. I would much rather own a Nissan 350Z convertible, Honda S2000, or a Mazda Miata (which I do own). It's not all about power. There has to be an inherent balance of components and some day-to-day live-ability.

An Elise is good for the weekend but the s2000 is the best. People buy it obviously what you said it's well build, it's also well balanced, and importantly the engine. It goes up to 9000 RPM!!!!!

What about a BMW Z3M Coupe? A bit quirky and goes like stink!

Alternatively buy a good tow car, because you're going to need it with a Freelander as you everyday car.

Honda S2000 - I know it is Japanese but a very cool looking car and always comes top on car buyer surveys.
