I adored Lords of the Realm II when I was younger (and ok, I am going to dig it out when I get in) as I enjoyed the management of my counties. I didn't enjoy Lords of the Realm III though as that was just one big real time battle (or so it seemed).
Is there a game similar to Lords II which I could get? What would you consider to be the best (preferably turn-based) strategy game for the PC?

As far as an RPG strategy game, i suggest diablo 2. and Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction.
It is one of the best games ever made.

If you don't have it already, get the Lords of the Realm II Siege Pack. There are additional maps and the AI is improved. You should also get Lordsedit.exe. I can email it to you if you don't have it. It allows you to change your default castles, default unit limits, and tax rates.

Civilisation is still the big one, there are even a couple of very good freeware versions based on Civ2 - FreeCiv and CivEvo.
Personally I like CivEvo - the AI is pretty good and there are some very good mods available for the game.

Rome Total War or any other total war game they have big time battles you can play or not and management of settlements and the entire roman empire.

I think that the best is command and conquer all of them you can never beat them i think C&C generals is the best and there bringing out C&C tiberan wars which will be great

civilisation by far.. but civ II, then civ.. id ignore the later versions done by Atari.
age of empires was ok.. , again version II in my mind was better
