For two or more vectors to be "equal" they must have the same magnitude and direction. The resultant sum can only be zero if the magnitude of each vector is zero.

If the object is at rest. For example, a table that does not move is pulling on the earth with 10N down, while the earth pulls back equally opposite with 10N up.
