The word 'math' in aftermath does not refer to mathematics (math). It is an old English word meaning .'mowing' (of grass). Hence the original meaning of 'aftermath' is the second mowing after the first mowing. This old meaning has been extended to its current meaning of a consequence (usually something that is not a good one) of an event.
