It scares me more if the movie is a psychological thriller than blood and guts and gore. Scarey movies that make you think, like the Mothman Prophecies are terrifying to me.

A book would be a page turner for me if it contains increadible description of the events and if reallt stimulates my imagination. On the other hand, in a movie, a prostetics or make-up is an advantage for me if it is really realistic and doens't seem to be a real fake or cheap. Another factor in a movie for me is the surprised effect of the characters such as in the wrong turn and in japanese movies such as the Grudge.

Suspense or a surprise or a psychological thriller are scarier to me like "The Silence of the Lambs". Or when a character changes into something or someone evil like "The Shining".
Some scary movies get it right by using this techniques, others rely on blood and gore which isn't scary, it's just gross and disturbing.

I don't like scary movies or books, but when it happens to see any horror movie on TV I put off the voice.
I think that the most frightening thing on a horror movie is music and sounds effect. Try to see one on mute!
