No.

At the time, Slavery was simply in existence.
The people around couldn't or wouldn't see what was wrong about it.
As peoples lives and views changed, they realised that Slavery was abhorrent.

Tony Blair and all of us alive today, were not responsible for the actions of our ancestors.
We are responsible for our own actions, Tony Blair could apologise for the fact that not enough is being done to stop slavery NOW but not then.

Slavery is illegal but still exists.
Stamp it out now!

The whole apology thing has gotten way out of hand. In the first place, it changes nothing, it's just a warmedy piece of feel-good nonsense. In the second place, where does it end? It would be better if TB were to apologise for his constant changes of opinion and policy, his hipocrisy, and the enormous waste of taxpayer's money on "studies" and "papers" that also change nothing. Then we'd ALL feel better, black white or green.

Since slavery has been abolished for some years, and Tony Blair wasn't even born then....no. The people responsible are long since gone, and although the practice of slavery was in-human, what good is an apology now? Remember, white slavery was also rife. Where do the apologies begin and end? They would be meaningless now. EDIT...BURGA K, stick to the question. You're not so hot yourself

Yes, but no living British person should feel PERSONALLY responsible as we had no part in and no power to change the past.

Tony Blair however represents Britain the COUNTRY, and thus needs to articulate the sorry for the actions of people in our country in times past.

as much as i dislike the man why should he have to apologise for something that happened way before his time you should only apologise for something your responsible for yes Britain played a part in slavery but the people who did it are long dead so whats the point as it wouldn't be sincere it was a horrific thing but thankfully its in the past

I think there are a lot of things he should apologise for, but our PAST involvement in slavery is not one of them. Now, we all know there are various contemporary forms of slavery which we should be ashamed of, but what is the point of apologising for something we weren't involved in. We should view that part of our history with shame and regret, but apologising now is just inappropriate and serves no purpose at all - recognise it was wrong and then move on and address some of society's current problems (starting with Bliar himself).

Would you people stop bringing up slavery? My goodness, for the most part everyone on this site bringing up slavery has been white, not black yet some of you enjoy saying "oh well blacks make such a big deal about slavery, lets send them back to africa". A lot of us are OVER slavery, so why don't you guys get over it too. Geez.

I think he was doing it for his own personnal reasons. I think it is a nice gesture but I think people apologising for it now is pointless as it is a part of our history and a sick and nasty as it was it happened and we cant change that.

I agree with you Serenity...a few white people in this site seem to have a chip on their shoulder.
