If you have to have one, Alienware, but not a laptop. A laptop is not meant to game on. Sure there are "gaming" laptops but they can't compete with a desktop. Desktops are upgradeable, laptops are not.
I on the other hand would build my own. My last build cost about 1800.00 in parts and software. A similar machine from Alienware would have cost about 3000.00. The XPS was about 2300.00. Want to know more look here.
Ultra Aluminus case (pimped out of course)
Core 2 Duo e6600 w/ Ultra fire CPU fan
Intel DG965wh Mobo
2 GB OCZ Platinum 800 MHz
2 x Seagate 320 GB SATA II hard drives in RAID 0
eVGA nVidia 8800 GTS OC w/640 MB DDR3
Liteon SATA DVD Rom
Liteon SATA DVD R RW
Floppy Drive (don't let anyone talk you out of this, they're 20.00)
500 watt Ultra X-finity power supply (should put 700 watt in)
Windows XP (should have got XP Pro)
CA Internet Security
Misc cables(including SATA II), sleeving, fans, lighting, wire ties

in response to a_l_t_e_r_n_o's comment going with a laptop all the time is not a smart choice. Desktops are better if you plan on doing work/ gaming in one place all the time, they also provide much better reliability heat wise as well as performance. A laptop though would be more useful if you're always on the go, like me i took mine with me when i deployed to Iraq. But i have since then bought a Desktop because they tend to be more powerful than most Laptops (unless you feel like spending 3500+ dollars) And being in the army i have worked on Dells for my entire career, i suggest you look elsewhere. Try www.cyberpowerpc.com its where i got mine and am very happy.

The big thing is a desktop offers more in the ways to upgrade...if you plan to keep the system for awhile and would like to eventually upgrade hardware...than a desktop is good...if you don't plan to upgrade alot of hardware in the future...and you like to be portable..then a laptop is a right choice.

No one is going to be able to give you any kind of decent answer until you give us some specs on each of the machines.
Example:
1-Ram size and type
2-Processor speed/type
3-Graphics chipset or card
ect.
All these things play a big role in how fast a machine will process the games and run them. So let us know some specs and we can go from there.

The i7 2600 on the gateway could be extra valuable than the hp processor. in case you do incredibly gaming then follow the HP. in case you run intense end video games then the gateway could be your answer. in my opinion that is extra valuable to construct your individual yet in case you do not opt for to attempt this then that's thoroughly your decision. both could be solid for multimedia ie video clips, song, youtube etc
