Waxing does hurt and your lip may feel numb for a few days after. Some people experience break outs and redness, so don't do it the same day you are planning to go out on a date or anything like that. I would suggest going to a proffesional rather than using an at home kit. If you try to do it yourself you might not pull the wax off quickly enough. The hair should not start growing back for a couple of weeks.

First, let me clear up a popular myth about waxing. Hair waxing does not accelerate the growth or thickness of hair follicles nor does it effect the coarseness. Hair should be at least 1/8" long before waxing.
If you are trying to remove upper lip hair, my suggestion would be to contact a dermatologist who performs laser hair removal. Find a professional who uses Light Sheer by Coherent, it is the best laser machine out there. You'll need a couple of treatments to have 85% permanent removal of the hair. Unfortunately, each session can cost you between $100-$200 per session.
Although the investment may seem scary initially for your wallet, the good news is that it is a permanent solutions. Waxing is not permanent and the cost of home-waxing systems can add up over years. But if you decide to do home waxing than any of the over the counter products work fine. You will find that each contain the same active ingredients and will temporarily remove your lip hair. It normally takes about 2-3 weeks for hair to grow long enough to repeat the process

It's no big deal. I do it once every 2 weeks or so. First time will be painful but not a big deal. You'll get used to it. And I do think it is the best way. I've tried depilatories (such as Nair, which irritates the skin wayy more than waxing) and threading, which is much more painful b/c it takes longer. Waxing is painful but very quick.
I would recommend threading for eyebrows though, to prevent saggy skin from waxing. The skin up there is more sensitive.

It hurts and you will be red after. Some people actually break out for a little while after it too. Just make sure that the wax isn't too hot because it can take off skin as well. Usually getting it done in a salon or one of those asian nail places you have nothing to worry about as far as the skin part but it varies person to person on whether or not you break out.

First off why are guys answering questions in women's health? A little creepy if you ask me. First, it's really harsh on your follicles. Whenever I wax, where every hair was ends up being a bump for about a week--the bumps are red for about 2 days. Ditto about being allergic to the wax. Ask around and find someone who's had it done before, and ask where they go. I found the best place in my town by doing that.
