I agree, probably looking at brake rotors, pads.
Depending on which shop you take it to, a full brake job ranges from 190.00, 300.00.
The front brakes wear faster than the rear in a front wheel drive car, especially if it does not have 4 wheel disc brakes. It would be the best to have all 4 corners done at the same time.
I would get a few estimates as it always pays to shop around, but remember that this is crucial that you take care of this right away for your safety.

These guys are right. It sounds like you will need pads and rotors for the thing, and if you are doing it, you might as well do all four at once.
Here are some prices I found at AutoZone.com, based on a V6 Malibu (2001):
Front Rotors: Duralast - 2 year warranty - $34.06 each
Brake Pads: Morse Ceramic - 2 year warranty - $37.99/pair
Rear Rotors are not available, so I think it may have drums on the back. I can't help with pricing on that, but it look like you will be forking out over $100 for parts on the front brakes alone. Call some shops (may be safer than driving to them all) and get some estimates on a full brake replacement. Knowing the prices of some parts helps to see if you are getting ripped off or not.
PS - Ceramic brakes means less brake dust = better performance.
Hope that helps. Good luck.

sounds to me you need to get the brake system checkes at all 4 wheels it dont sound good The clanking noise you hear may be a broken spring in the rear drum.If thats the case your rear brakes are not working and your front brakes are doing all the work. That why your car is dancing when you put on the brake.Your rotors are warped and hopefully your calipers are alright.Last time my sister had this kind of work done she paid $600 for the job and got a bitchin out from me cuz I could have done it for $200 or less (that was just the parts I dont charge her for labor but if I was to charge labor it would be $100 for the whole brake job plus parts, its not that hard to do.) good luck

Poor Girl, what you need is relief, spelled H-A-Y-N-E-S. That is Haynes Repair Manual for you car. Yes you will need a brake job. Cost too much. You will have to check around for prices. Go to a small automotive shops as sometimes they can do them a little cheaper.
Also, CHECK the brake fluid container under the hood and make sure it has fluid in it too.
But the clanking sound, is where you are meeting metal to the petal. Costs will vary from around $100 for the front and up to $200 from the back. Yup, highway robbery. If you go in a shop like a small one, tell them that you normally change your brakes yourself, but that you hurt your back and can not bend over too good. That way the mechanic does not think you are a rookie or another dumb female. hahaha Might work.
