Homo sapiens includes everyone living today so 1 year ago counts as a way they "did" communicate.
So, besides speech, sign language, body language, and drawing symbols and pictures, they:

invented radio and telcommunication
used telephones and telegraphs
used smoke signals
used writing
used the internet
used 2 cans with a waxed string between them
used Braille and methods using the sense of touch

those are the main ways homo sapiens communicated, last year.
So they're part of the ways in which homo sapiens did communicate, over all time. That may change if someone invents a new way, of course.

why am I the only one who noticed you didn't use any words like "primitive" or "prehistoric?"

Body language & gestures. If you look at apes - this is how they communicate. Language still uses this & if you watch people when they are talking - you see people gesturing all the time both with face, hand & arm movements and with posture.
