But the Vet tells me that it would catch colds in the Winter time. What would you advise?

i shave my kitty cat all the time and i...oops she never gets a cold. she's a hairless wonder. happy day:)

Do it. The fur will grow back. Plus it is a one time deal.

Not only that, they purr real nice after an event like that. It is a win-win for both parties.

Do it - it will be a nice bonding expeirence for the two of you. Take it slow, gentle, and do it right. My girlfriend and I remove all the carpeting at both of our places and got down to hardwood floors.

Get a professional to send the cat to Brasil, things can get very prickly if you do it the wrong way!
