I have tried putting my computer into safe mode but this does not work as I don't think it get to this point. I have an initial screen which allows me to get into BIOS setup or network boot but this is all. After this screen disappears a screen comes up with a cursor flashing in the left corner and nothing else.

wow some great help answers on this one NOT !!!!

i bet you can get your PC into safe mode , think about it here your PC was working fine until you did the update then the issue started so what would be the first thing you would check ? THE UPDATES , your issue is as part of your Microsoft upgrade you probably downloaded a nvida graphic card update . and thus caused your issue , this is a known problem with Microsoft , you need to go in and delete the graphic card driver , don't worry it will roll back to to what you had , and all will be fine again , i have seen this issue many times

Put your XP cd in the drive and boot to CD. Do an automated repair and you should be back in business. You will have to do updates all over again, and you may have to reinstall other software, but your data will be intact.
I hope this helps.

sounds more like your harddrive nuked itself. It was probably just an odd coincidence, and not a result of the Windows update since Harddrives do have a finite life span..

harddrives are pretty cheap, but if you did not have backups..then your s.o.l and have lost your data..
