I have recently been getting more interested in bowling. Should I bowl straight or hook it? I am better at straight but Im afraid that bowling straight will affect how good I could possibly get compared to hooking it. Most people who are really good at bowling hook the ball. So in your opinion should I start hooking it or just keep throwing it straight? Are there professional bowlers who are successful and bowl straight? Thank you.

The best bowling method is to learn how to deliver the bowling ball both with a hook and straight. For example, Walter Ray Williams Jr., Pete Weber and Norm Duke are major names in bowling that are versatile with hooking the ball as well as throwing it straight. For a straight bowler with lots of success, National titles and a 300 bowled on TV, it would be Butch Soper. Not all bowlers who exclusively hook the ball are necessarily good or great. Just watch the early TV appearances of Tommy Jones or Robert Smith. The conditions were not really favoring the big hook balls, so straight shooters were winning over them.

When I bowled professionally, I thought I could use my rainbow hook with success, but I was wrong. I had to relearn the basics with a down and in straight delivery from the outside. With both a straight and hooking delivery, I got better and learned bowling much more easily. The straight delivery also helped very much with my split and corner pin leaves. It all depends on what lane condition is out there that would determine if a straight shot or hook delivery will work. Some league nights I would bowl straight on one lane and hook the other.

My advice would be to learn both deliveries. It will help you out if you get serious with the sport. Good luck!

Heres my suggestion: Start with a straight ball, exspecialy if your better at it for right now. When your beginning to bowl more its better to start with a straight ball. Then once you get the idea of bowling and know what your doing go on to a hook ball. Right now im bowling with a straight ball and soon getting a hook one, and it took me 2 years to get used of bowling. So it takes time. Just make sure u practice. And lessons always help as well.

Best of Luck. :]

develop a good straight ball, it always comes in handy because its great if you can hook it but if you cant throw a straight ball, then you cant go anywhere.
learning to hook the ball isnt really that hard, you know how to do it, you just have to get in the habit of doing it everytime
everyone throws different and if you dont want to hook it you dont have to. it depends on how long youve been bowling because ive been bowling for 2 years and have fingertips grips and im hooking the ball but before this year, i didnt really have any hook and since i started hooking, ive been doing better, maybe find a coach and talk to them about it and have them watch you bowl and they can analyze your form

The answer to your question is a tough one. Getting a ball to "hook" is not the way to improve your bowling. Yes it does look very impressive and at times it can generate high scores. But more often than not, it is very hard to make the same delivery (ball speed, axis tilt and revolutions) and hit the same spot on the lanes (referred to as a "mark") every time. What you should try to accomplish, is bowling more consistently. One great way to accomplish this goal is to start making more spares. If you can increase just one more spare per game, your score will actually increase by at least 11 pins. My best suggestion is to find a coach, not just any old bowler, but a certified coach through USBC. This person should be able to show you how to properly deliver a ball and show you how to improve your game. Hopefully this answers your question, May the high scores be yours.

if u are only playing once in awhile then just throw straight but if you plan on bowling alot or jioning a league then u should start to learn the hook. It is very hard to get it down but practice and you will figure it out.
