Make-up? Less sometimes looks better, don't get why they say more though!!

There are just too many examples where less is more. Some of the answers have already given you examples of this. I think makeup is definitely a good example. Design is another. Simple design is usually more classy than very complicated design where the designer doesn't know where to stop and ruin his own work at the end. A woman's figure is also where less is more can be applied. A woman looks best if she has a naturally trim figure and not too "breasty" and worse if she has implants so big that they look as if they are going to burst anytime. Money to a certain extent buys happiness but when you have too much money, trouble usually follows and messes up your good life. You become the target of kidnappers and your private life will be exposed to the world. You don't know which of the people in your life is genuine or trustworthy. You can end up pretty miserable when you get mega rich suddenly. Lovers --- if you have too many of them you don't have time and you get nagged by everyone. When they fight over you, you would rather kill yourself! The list of examples to show you "less is more" is really true is just endless.

hmmm. a lot of the answers you have been given so far seem a bit daft to me. :) you could go on for hours listing 'less of *this* is more of *the other*' type answers, whether that's hair/baldness, noise/quiet, hole/no hole, whatever... because all they are saying is that less of one thing is more of it's opposite. THIS IS ALWAYS TRUE!!!

and it's not what the phrase means.

the phrase is using the words *less* and *more* in two different ways. it is drawing attention to the difference between *quality* and *quantity*. less (in the sense of quantity) is more (in the sense of quality).
or, to put it a different way
'if you are trying to acheive a desired effect, don't overdo it, as you'll most likely acheive the opposite.'

those who've mentioned make-up or apologies (for example) are near the mark:
- if you are wearing make-up to look *attractive*, trying too hard and wearing lots and lots of it is going to make you look unattractive.
similarly
- if you are wanting to apologise, then constantly going on about it is going to make your apology seem insincere.
or
- if you want your christmas tree to look *colourful*, then using two or three different coloured balls is more likely to achieve this effect than using twenty different colours.
or
- if you punish someone all the time for every little thing, then *punishment* will become *normality* and become ineffectual. less is more.

i've been racking my brains trying to think of some clever scenario where less of one thing is more of THE SAME thing...
but i'm too stupid :(

I can think of a few such as wearing jewellery and make up, home decor, art works (some of them), & information, some times people get lost in details, so less would actually be more informative if to the point.

In language (writing, speaking) it can be said that simplicity is clearer than prolixity. That is, by using fewer words and stating the clear message that more communication is gained.

If you think about the way politicians answer questions it may be easier to understand this!

Painkillers.

if you use too many advils, they won't work as an effective painkiller.
if you use the reccommended amount of painkillers which is def. on the less side, the painkilling effect will be more effective. so with advil, less is more.
