I think you question is wrong. I don't think that pills are the answer and there are a lot of people out there that believe the same thing. I think what we see occurring is Doctors being trained to give out medications. Commercials advertising them. Drug companies pushing the meds via the commercials and through "samples" given to doctors' offices which the doctors give out for patients to try which may or may not have the intended effect, either by actually working or a temporary placebo effect the patient carries a long term script for that "sample" drug.
So is it our society or is it corporations that believes pills are the answer?

I have to disagree not only with the 3 answers that preceed mine but also with the question. I don't think our society is "hooked" on pills, although many consumers are indeed addicted. There is a big difference between the two. What you have to remember is that only 50 years ago we didn't have penicillen and that people were dying from T.B. and polio. If you aren't that old then you don't remember any of this. You don't remember anyone talking about having a "nervous breakdown". Nowadays, doctors and consumers alike recognize that many people have chemical imbalances in the brain which are identified as chronic depression and are treated with anti-depressants. Nowadays, the "enlightened" people recognize that people don't have "fits" they have epileptic seizures which are also successfully treated with medication. I don't consider that these people are "hooked".

Some pills are necessary to some people and their medical issues. Some mental issues can be resolved by pills, if it is caused by a biological reason. Other pills, such as diet pills are used because our society is so focused on instant gratification. We need solutions, and we need them now. It's sad because some of these pills are potentially addicitve.

Because the pharmaceutical companies market that notion to people to increase profits. The average consumer has the IQ of a popscicle stick
and will believe just about anything they see in an ad.

Because we are a lazy nation, always looking for the easy out. We question everything logical, (because that is our right) but like idiots we believe there is a magic pill for everything.
