Why hello there, youngish-looking yellow-haired Anglo-Saxon female! I'm guessing it's convenience, if anything else. And please - call me "grey-person-viewed-in-profile the first," to distinguish me from the other ninety-odd "grey-persons-viewed-in-profile."
Cheers! (and apologies if you found my humor un-humorous - I was feeling a bit on the satirical side today ;)

For a few reasons, one if for other people to recognize you.
Families have traditions such as keeping alive the memory of a loved one by giving you their name.
Names originate from people wanting to remember the place they feel their baby was conceived, such as, Sandy, after a sandy beach.
They may have had wonderful memories of events in April, May, June, July and use those names of months for their children.
People name their children after flowers that they love such as Rose, Lilly, Iris, Ivy or after Gems, such as Pearl, Jade or Ruby.
Names such as Peaches, Apple, Berry and Cookie are also around.
People have their traditions and reasons, there is even a famous skier by the name of "Peek A Boo".

Saussure (a language theorist) would say it's to give meaning to objects, because meaning can only be found inside of language. Derrida says in order to understand the world at all, we are forced to form concepts of things. We name these concepts as a way of identifying them to ourselves or other people. He says that our naming is problematic, because our concepts are never perfect and can all be deconstructed, but we can't help doing it.
It's a way of drawing boundaries. Without concepts (and therefore names) we would only have a mass of light and colour and sensation and no way to make sense of it. So we use names to understand, to explain, to predict, to make good experiences repeatable, to avoid bad experiences.

the name reflects our believes, identity, what we like or dislike.
it name our children after ideals that we wish our children to follow.
Moreover the name has a great significant in different cultures, for example, some tribes have awful names so they keep the bad spirits away.
