There are two stories I can think of that deal with a veil ... Hawthorne's the "Minister's Black Veil" in which the veil is symbolic of the division that separates who we are from what people see of us. It is that idea of secret sin that separates us from others. Only in heaven will all sins be forgiven and the veil will be lifted.

WEB DuBois also talks about the veil in the novel Souls of Black Folk. For him, blacks in the South live behind the veil. It's a dividing line between the white society and the life that blacks live. He sees it as a symbol of oppression and division.
