my guess is that it is,
2*12=24
7*11=77 so,
24*10=240

Look at the successive differences. They go 5, 17, 53. Each one is three times the previous one, plus two.
Now three times 53, plus two, gives 161 which should be the next difference, so the next number should be 77 plus 161 which is 238, the most popular answer so far.
However, if you look instead at the differences of the differences, they go 12, 36. The second one is 24 more than the first one, so the next one is 60, so the next difference after 53 is 113, so the next number after 77 is 190.
There is no single correct answer. You just have to decide which "rule" you think is the simplest or most obvious.

The answer is 240 because the series follows a certain pattern in which the division factor starts from 12 i.e. 24/2 which is equal to 12, in the next instance 77/7 which equals 11.
Therefore the next number would be the 10 multiple of 24 is 240
As we see the division factors are descending in increments of one

hey!! Thats simple
The solution of the series is 3n+x
(n= previous number series)
(x is the next successive odd number starting from 1)
taking n=2
2 x 3+1= 7
7 x 3+3=24
24x3+5=77
So the next number is
77 x 3 +7= 238
So the answer is 238 and not 240 in any case

238 is the next element if you follow this pattern:
x(n+1) = x(n)*3 + (n*2) - 1
In other words, multiply by three and add the next odd number, so we have 2*3+1=7, 7*3+3=24, 24*3+5=77, then 77*3+7=238
That would be my guess.

as you can see from the preceding posts, different assumptions about the underlying arithmetic behavior of the numbers in the series lead to different answers for the fifth term. in general, this is true. what makes an answer more acceptable than another depends upon the underlying assumptions which a solver make in order to arrive at a solution. in this case, lack of additional information regarding the context in which the problem is posed lead to different answers, all of which are correct in their respective contexts.
to answer your question, the answer is NOT always 240 in every case.

I would like to know what level math this is...if it is high level math I don't see a pattern...if it is as simple as I think your pattern should be something like this, although this really isn't much of a mathematical sequence.
2, 7, 24, 77, 246, 777, 2468, 7777
