I do not recommend nor discourage either. If you read the specs on the CPUs and see how many numbers each can crunch in a cycle you will see that AMD will crunch more but also is actually a slower CPU than an equivalent Pentium. As a guide, a Pentium 4 ghz would have a clock speed of 4 ghz, while an AMD $ ghz would probably have an actual clock speed of about 3.5 ghz. But since the AMD crunches more numbers per cycle, I would say it would beat the Pentium on sheer speed or amount of data crunched in a given amount of time (say 1 second).

I run an AMD 64 bit 3 GHZ + processor which has a clock speed of 2000 mhz and find it does what I want it to. Go to any computer shop and they will either tell you that it depends what you want it for - Games, Music, Graphics, reading Email, etc, then tell you one is better for one type of use than the other. Otherwise they will tell you the best one is the one they make the most money from.

What I have been told is the AMD is better for music and games than the Pentium but you have to make up your own mind based on what you can afford and your intended use.

Talk to some other shops or independent experts - read reviews in computer mags as they are not paid by either manufacturer to say nice things about their processor.

AMD X2 is far superior to Intel Pentium D

AMD Athlon x2 3600+
Amd 3600+ will be great at 3d modeling, 3dmax, autocad.

3600+ is equal to 3.6 Intel

Both are good processors, this is similar to which is better, Ford or Chevy?

What is your intended use? Is there some program you have that calls for specific functions that are not supported by one of these?

Sorry but this is really an opinion question, so read all the answers you get knowing they will be biased based on the users usage.
