It's so infurating. The game is nearly as old as their whole nation and yet they've decided to badge it "soccer". AFL/gridiron is played with the hands (mostly) and so it's really dumb to call it football. It's pretty small minded of them really.

'Soccer' comes from the word 'association'. The 'Football Association' was formed in England to administer the Sport. It was an association of Football clubs. The game they administered became known as 'Association Football' to differentiate it from 'Rugby Football' which was also invented in the 19th Century.

'Soc' is a common diminutive of Society or Association, and so the game became known as 'Soccer'.

There is now a myth in England, that only Americans have ever called it 'Soccer', whereas the British call it 'Football' and always have.

This myth is not true. As recently as 30 years ago, everyone in Britain called it Soccer. Only our mothers ever called it 'Football', and we ridiculed them for it!!! 'Soccer' was the name adopted by the US when 'Soccer' (as it then was known) was first marketed earnestly in the States.

Possibly BECAUSE the Yanks started calling it 'Soccer', the perverse British started calling it 'Football', and now bare-facedly lie that they have NEVER called it 'Soccer'.

Gav (the first answerer) is almost correct, people in England and the rest of the world were calling Football Soccer long before the Americans 'bastardised' it, as many people claim. The only fact Gav's gotten wrong is that Rugby was invented before Football/Soccer.

Rugby came about because a boy at Rugby school decided to pick up the football during a normal football game - apparently inspired by the Gaelic game of Caid - and others liked the idea so drew up rules. Rugby's official name is actually Rugby Football.

Who cares. Quit watching other people live their lives. Get off the couch and start your own life. The Roman emperors had the gladatorial games in order to keep the stupid populace from thinking about real issues. Maybe the current leaders learned from those days. Sitting on the couch watching HOURS of other people playing a game wastes time. You could be taking a college class, playing with your children, or even going for a walk. I never understood all the excitement of watching people you don't even know run around on a field. I ESPECIALLY am frightened by all those European crazies that actually RIOT over the actions of people they don't know kicking a soccer/foot ball around. A bunch of fools...

it pisses me off that FOOTBALL was originated in ENGLAND, grew throughout England and yet just because the Americans have American Football, they (once again) basterdized a perfectly good word and renamed the sport soccer? It's like, if they ever try to play rugby, calling it Mudball, or something totally unrelated to the sport.

You play with your feet not your hands in real football!
Besides in American football they are wimps!! they are covered from head to toe, in stupid protective gear! In "soccer" on the other hand they only wear shin gaurds.

Why couldn't they have just called it English Football, or better still changed American Football to Poofters with big paychecks or something equally apt for their dumbass game!

Any better suggestions for renaming American Football, so we can have Football back throughout the world are appreciated. And also any good, stimulating discussion on this topic.

Mad girl.

Actually the term soccer originated in England. We just use it because we already have American football and want to prevent any confusion.
