Our heart is our soul and our soul knows what is best for us. Reason doesn't always get along with the heart and soul and it shows everywhere in this world today......

No. The heart, literally speaking, is an organ for the circulation of blood around the body.

Metaphorically speaking though... to say that emotional matters don't account for reasoning is true enough. To claim that reason doesn't know them however would only apply in primitive-minded people who have not gained a higher level of self-awareness.... i.e. most people.... not all.

I have had enough of an education in the processes of evolution and behavioural biology to understand to a fairly detailed extent how instinct functions in practice... and as such have learnt to intercept, ignore and otherwise control it in myself. My control is not absolute, but close enough...

I sometimes see people commenting that their emotions are strong, or that they cannot control them.... and I suspect it is simply because they do not have the knowledge / understanding / willpower to do so. It isn't that hard otherwise.

Once you have learnt how a dog thinks and figured out how to control it, you have already learnt to control your "heart".

the heart and reason are of themselves, and know of each other. it's called personality. somewhere the confusion must end in a choice of who you are. you can't say: everyone be like this or else you're horribly flawed.. you can't say: perfection is impossible, so make the best of this cheap hypocritical thrill.. you can't say: the heart and reason are at constant war w/ each other. this dualism has to stop before people think it's ok to simply run around like a headless chicken. people have to think for themselves. people have to come together in celebration of their choices, rather than total disgust.

My Star question.... the quote makes a profound point.

I agree totally. Indeed our feelings that we presume arise in our heart are also governed by a reasoning process that is data based though subconscious in nature.... because it is subconscious, our conscious mind is unable to know or understand it. A considerable amount of data from past experiential moments is stored in our subconscious, which sets up the basis for our inclinations and feelings... our conscious mind is unable to access it and hence leads us to believe as though our feelings operate without reason or with such reasons as are not logically explicable.

The mind must show its depth in order to taste the dark waters of the heart.

I don't believe there is a more true statement for the entire human race. That can be good and bad.
